XLVI

I was the fourth or fifth cab on 3rd street when she walked up. It appeared as though she had just stepped off the golf course with her golf hat, plaid sweater vest and Capris. At most any other time that would not have seemed so weird but at close to three in the morning on a Tuesday the outfit was exceptional. Not surprisingly she appeared to be moderately drunk and unfortunately my doors where not locked so she got right in and said,

“Can you take me to 3497479?”

I had to think about it for a second,

“Is that a phone number?” I replied.

“You need a phone number?”

“An address… would be better.”

“You don’t know where that is?”

“Tell it to me again.”

“349-7479.”

“ Nope” I replied immediately, “I don’t know where that is.”

“Ok” she said, “I’ll call you later.”

“O…K.” I said as she climbed out of my cab. It was easily one of the strangest conversations I’ve ever had and as cool as that is I had a bit of an empty feeling inside. Something just wasn’t right. That was when it hit me. I should call the number.
I reached into the center console of my cab and picked up my phone. I had no problem remembering the number and quickly dialed it. In short time a female voice answered,

“Hello?”

“Hello.” I said back.

“Who is this?”

“Hi.”

“Hello?”

“Ok. I’ll call you later.”

Hey, new visitor linked from Waiter Rant. I dig your blog and am wondering if you could score an RSS feed so I can add you to my feeds list? (perhaps asking too much for my first visit, yes).

Thanks in advance for considering. =)

I've had nights like that. Only I was the doofus. :)

Maybe in her drunken state she processing the idea of calling a cab company where they know where you by your phone number (only if you've used the service before).

I remember being high and walking into a hotel and wondering out loud why my room wasn't ready yet. The poor girl looked at me. "Sir - um, what's your name?"
